SD Card Errors, Formatting, and Replacement
SD cards are consumable items — constant loop recording wears them out over time. Most SD card errors ("Check SD card" alerts, camera rebooting, missing footage) are fixed by formatting.
⚠ Before you format: back up your footage. Formatting erases everything on the card. If you have accident or incident footage, save it to your phone or computer FIRST. If the footage is important and the card is failing, stop using the camera and contact us before formatting.
Format via the BlackVue App (quickest)
- Open the app and go to your camera list.
- Tap More (...) on the camera with the SD issue.
- Tap Format SD Card and confirm.
- The dashcam announces "Formatting the SD card. Please do not turn off the power," then reboots.
Format via computer (thorough fix)
- Insert the SD card into your computer with a microSD reader.
- Open the BlackVue Viewer and click the Format (SD card icon) button.
- Select your SD card drive and follow the prompts. For 64GB cards or larger, make sure the tool formats to FAT32 (or the file system recommended for your model).
Physical inspection: remove the card and check the gold contacts for scratches or residue; wipe gently with a dry cloth and reinsert firmly.
When to replace instead of format: if errors return within days of formatting, the card has likely reached end of life. Third-party cards (especially non-High-Endurance class 10 cards) are known to cause reboot loops and "Check SD card" alerts — if you're not using an official BlackVue SD card, test with an official one to rule out incompatibility. Use High-Endurance, Class 10 / U3 (V30) cards.
Warranty: SD cards typically carry a 6 - 12 month warranty. Keep your receipt; contact us with the card brand, capacity, and purchase details to check eligibility.
